Your Thoughts Were Never as Solid as They Felt

You're awake right now, and you don't even know why.

Your body's tired. Your mind isn't. It's still checking — that thing you said today, the look on their face, whether you gave away more than you meant to.

The tight chest before you walk into any room. Scanning every face before you've said a word. That pause right after you speak — the flinch, waiting for the blow that might come back at you.

Some nights you can't fall asleep until you've replayed it enough times to feel safe. And even then, you wake up already carrying the weight of it, before your eyes are even open — wondering if today's the day everyone finally sees the real you, the one you've been hiding, and leaves.

The mask fits so well now, no one's ever seen under it. Not even the people who love you.

I wore that mask for thirty years. Until I broke every rule I had to try and take it off.

I went into debt. Real debt — the kind that went against everything I believed about money, about risk, about who I was supposed to be. I did it because I wanted the pain to stop more than I wanted to feel safe.

I was sitting at my desk, waiting for a call I'd bet everything on.

Did I do the right thing. Did I just jeopardize my family. Did I risk it all on a hope that's about to cost us everything.

The thoughts sped up. My heart raced to keep pace with them — faster, then faster again. Normally I could breathe through this, or talk myself down. Not this time. There was no stopping it.

The room in front of me turned into a city moving in fast motion, lights streaking past.

Then I remembered a story about a monster and a rope — a giant thing, pulling me toward a hole, and no matter how hard I fought, it kept winning. I fought anyway. Tears streaming down my face, growling through my teeth, no — I've doomed us all —

Then I stopped fighting. I accepted it. If this was it, this was it. I let go of the rope.

The second I did, the city in front of me became a calm, babbling brook. Not faded — became. Right there, in my office, in front of my eyes.

Something crashed to the floor. Like the old version of me had melted right out of my body.

I was renewed. Exhausted, but renewed.

Little did I know, that was only the beginning of what I was about to experience.

I still don't fully know what happened in that chair. But I haven't worn the mask the same way since.

I went looking for an answer to make the pain stop. What I found instead was something nobody had ever handed me plainly: the mask wasn't protecting me from anything real. It was protecting me from a thought — one so old, so convincing, I'd mistaken it for the truth for thirty years.

That's the part almost nobody tells you. Not that your thoughts are wrong. That they were never as solid as they felt.

That's what I brought back. Not a technique. Not a fix. Just this — the same thing that found me in that chair, now something I get to hand to someone else.

If you're still awake right now, mask on, checking — this is where it starts to come off.

Every journey starts somewhere.
